Another large-scale financial incident at NH NongHyup Bank has sent shockwaves through the financial sector.
It was revealed that Mr. A, an employee working at a branch in Seoul, engaged in suspected embezzlement activities totaling 11.7 billion won over approximately four years, from June 2020 to August this year. Mr. A was found to have taken out large loans by using a friend's name without permission, and these improper loan transactions were uncovered during an internal audit that began on the 20th.
However, on the 21st, while the audit was still ongoing, Mr. A took his own life, bringing the case to a tragic end. As a result, the internal audit has currently been suspended, and there is growing attention on whether further investigations by financial authorities and within the bank will be conducted.
This incident marks the fourth financial crime at NH NongHyup Bank this year, with similar cases occurring in March and May. NH NongHyup Bank President Lee Seok-yong promised to strengthen internal controls during a press conference in June, but the series of incidents has intensified criticism of the bank's internal control system.
