Kim Dong-hwan, the eldest son of Binggrae Chairman Kim Ho-yeon and the third-generation leader of the company, has been indicted and brought to trial for allegedly assaulting a police officer while intoxicated.
The Seoul Western District Prosecutors’ Office announced on the 22nd that Kim was indicted without detention on the 14th on charges of obstructing official duties.
Kim is accused of assaulting a police officer who was trying to restrain him during a drunken disturbance at an apartment complex in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, on June 17. The incident occurred when the police were dispatched to the scene following a report from a nearby resident.
Kim has expressed deep remorse for the incident and extended his apologies to those affected.
Kim joined Binggrae in 2014 and has held various roles within the company. He was promoted to an executive position in January 2021 and was appointed as president in March of this year. His appointment as president was seen as a signal of the formal beginning of Binggrae's third-generation leadership.
Binggrae has been led by Chairman Kim Ho-yeon since its separation from the Hanwha Group in 1998, and this incident is expected to deal a significant blow to Kim’s leadership. The company has not yet released an official statement regarding the matter.
