Seoul's Gangseo District has developed comprehensive measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in response to a rapid increase in hospitalized cases.

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the number of COVID-19 inpatients has been steadily rising since the end of June, reaching 1,359 by the second week of August, a figure approximately six times higher than that in the third week of July.

The variant virus KP.3, which is driving the current surge, shows no significant difference in severity or fatality compared to previous Omicron variants. However, the district is proactively preparing for the possibility of further outbreaks.

Gangseo District has shortened the supply cycle for COVID-19 treatments and is providing updates on designated medical institutions and pharmacies on the district health center's website to inform residents. In particular, the district is operating dedicated response teams at facilities vulnerable to infection, such as nursing hospitals and long-term care institutions, and is working to secure epidemic prevention supplies and strengthen the response system to curb the spread of infection.

Additionally, Gangseo District has designated Our Hospital and Bumun Hospital as sentinel surveillance institutions for acute respiratory infections, requiring them to report COVID-19 case numbers weekly. Starting in October, the district plans to conduct vaccinations using new vaccines for seniors aged 65 and older and other vulnerable populations.

District Mayor Jin Kyo-hoon stated, "Although awareness of COVID-19 has decreased, it remains a dangerous disease for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those with underlying conditions," and added, "I urge residents to strictly adhere to basic hygiene practices like hand washing and coughing etiquette. Please ensure to wear masks in crowded places and promptly get tested if you exhibit any symptoms."
